Last Novemeber, I decided to join the KidZone team. KidZone is basically the equivalent of Sunday School in my Church. It is for 0-12 year olds (there are 5 separate groups for different ages) and there is games, fun, sweets and Bible teaching. I help run the 9-12 group every 4th Sunday of the month.

Today, I was doing KidZone and we were doing about serving. I had dressed up as a servant, serving them drinks and biscuits and Jonathan (the guy who does it with me) was explaining that I was serving them, with no benefit to myself. As soon as he said that, about 5 of the kids jumped up, went over to the drinks and started offering people drinks. Another one of the kids offered me the rest of his drink. This made me think: what we teach kids at a young age really does make an effect. I think it is great to be part of KidZone - watching the children grow and meet Jesus is amazing! :D

It's great that you can have an influence on those younger than you, and you're right: training them young DOES stick with them. I just watch my girls. The thing is (and you're definitely picking this up) you can't just teach them and tell them...SHOWING them is the key! The live example of you dressing as a servant was inspired.

That's great! My church also calls the children's ministry "KidZone" although they go by grade (up to 6th) not age, once they're in school.

My husband used to work with the 4 year olds and I think he got so much out of that. He says he misses it sometimes, but he gets too involved in too many ministries that we don't get time together so he dropped a lot of things.

It's so important to get to the kids while they're still young. But then you have to just reinforce it even more when they're teens. Because that's when they're most at risk of turning their backs.

Yeah, we do it by school year too.

You are very right about teenagers. I am very lucky in that my parents are assistant pastors who both really love Jesus at our Church, which means I can get all the love and support I need at home. However, not all teenagers are as lucky as me. A few years ago, the youth co-ordinator started up something called CrossOver. This was separate from KidZone and aimed purely at teens. It is still great fun, but we get great ministry and teaching there too. It has been very effective: most teenagers go to it and most of them really enjoy is. There is a chance for them to be in the talk (there only CrossOver on weeks 2 and 4), meaning that we can go into the main talk on some weeks. I think that is also very important.

Who's yours?

That sounds like great ministries at your church. You are definitely fortunate, and I love that you are trying to spread the message to those younger than you.

That's really great! I am hoping to find some good program here for my kids. So far, it's just been really disappointing this year.

Aww Jami! I guess that's a downfall for the place you're at huh?

Then again, some people even in larger metro areas can still have troubles. My stepdaughter's church doesn't have much in teh way of kids stuff. It's a small Spanish church though and they think kids will be OK just listening to the pastor basically scream (it's a Spanish pentecostal church - which means a lot of yelling of the message). They have absolutely nothing for teens. Thankfully, my stepdaughter's mom and stepfather are really good with their kids and they are following the Lord!

My church has a Youth Group (for 12-19) that is so good, it consists of mostly "unchurched" teens! We only have about a dozen teens in our church, but Youth Group meetings sometimes run up to about 30 kids! Dawn, Kevin and Katie are the best!

I think kids work is so important. When I saw that age, I was in a different Church where the kids groups weren't that great (I was 8 and a 'fun' game was supposed to be ordering the books of the Bible...). It's so great to be able to teach children about Jesus in a fun way! My brother's in the group and I alwys ask him if he;s had fun and if he's learnt something. If the answer to both of those is yes, I know it was a good one. :)
