The other night I was giving the girls their shower. I was scrubbing Deborah when I noticed red around one of her fingernails that looked like blood. Since she is a chronic nail-biter, I thought she had bitten it down too far. I asked her, "What happened here?" She looked at her finger and said, "It was an accident at [where she goes during the summer]." I asked her if she told someone when it happened, and she said no.

That made me furious! Deborah (and Elizabeth too, for that matter) will NOT tell a grown-up when they get hurt when they're not at home! I started chewing her out, telling her how she has GOT to tell someone when something happens, how an infection could make her sick, etc. I was so upset I was at the verge of tears.

Deborah, near tears herself, said, "I'm sorry, Mom. It was an accident. The marker slipped."

"Magic marker?"

"Yes."

I felt about 3 inches tall. I started to profusely apologize. We both ended up crying and laughing at the same time.

I'm sorry but I'm laughing here because that's cute! But you know...I'd probably react similarly.

In all honesty, I AM laughing at it...and so is Deborah! She and I now have a running gag. All I have to do is mention "red magic marker" and she gives me her "smart-alec" smile. Of course, no one else will get why she will give me this face after I say "red magic marker", so it kinda makes it special between us.

She had also appreciated that, even tho I'm the Mommy, I DID apologize for jumping to conclusions all over her booty. Valuable lesson, that. Grown-ups make mistakes, and should apologize for them - even to kids.

Very true it's important for kids to see that.

I agree wholeheartedly. What a cute story to remember, and something to make each other smile without others understanding why.

There is a "sequel" to the story:

A couple of days ago I went to pick Deborah up, and she told me that she had skinned her elbow. She said that it happened just a little while ago, while playing outside. I asked her if she told anyone and, of course, she said "no". I made her tell someone right then and there (it HAD pretty much "just" happened) and explained to her - AGAIN - that she HAS to tell someone!

Yesterday I went to pick her up and noticed bandaids on both of her knees. She came up to me smiling (with that charming, Thumper-like, one-front-tooth smile) and said, "I skinned my knees...and I told someone!"

LOL Poor kid...maybe scrapes and bruises just don't bother her...they never did me.

This is the same girl who screams bloody murder if she stubs her toe...or spills water on her shirt...but she doesn't say "boo" if there's blood!
