Well, this season of AWANA has started, so I decided to actually start a topic for it; this way, any other parents who have kids in AWANA can chime in.

The girls have already started the year full-tilt-boogie. Deborah was the first one to get the first badge (again). I fully anticipate her getting the first jewel this Friday, especially since one of the lessons is on a story from Judges: Deborah! The other 2 stories for this section are (I believe) Daniel and Samuel. She knows these stories pretty well.

Cubbies all go at the same rate, so Elizabeth can't go ahead...however, she DOES recite the weekly verse with just a tad more enthusiasm than the other kids. This year we've also allowed Elizabeth to bring her own Bible from home. Sparks (Deborah) are encouraged to anyway, so we figured we might as well get her into the habit now.

This is going to be a fun year, and we're all looking forward to it! (OK, so Snowy and I are also looking forward to having our Coffee Dates back!)

I'm really glad you have found a good Awana group. I wish ours here were better. My son sat by himself and was never even given a book, even though he did everything on the pamphlet. And they rarely gave the jewels to Deborah that she earned. The kids didn't even like going.

That IS awful. Our group is great. One time they forgot to mark down that Deborah had earned a jewel; Deb walked right up to the leader (after all of the awards were given out) and called him on it...he checked her book, found that she was right, and gave it to her right away.

Last week I was talking to one of the leaders. She said that there are so many leaders that it's almost one-on-one!

I think the leadership they had that year is where many of the problems came in, but it soured my kids from wanting to go back.

Tonight Deborah had invited her buddy Christopher to AWANA...and his parents brought him! Better still, he LOVED it! Normally he's "all boy" and doesn't really sit still much - to the point that Kristina (his mom) is looking at having him tested as possible ADD. When we got there at the end of the evening, he was sitting PERFECTLY still, enjoying the story time. Deborah was very proud to be able to share AWANA with him.

This week's AWANA was very interesting...

First of all, Deborah's friend Christopher DID come back, and loved it just as much as his first week. It was really funny at the end of the evening, during the awards. Deborah was the first one called, which Christopher thought was neat. However, a couple of kids later, HE was called (he earned his vest, book and card). The look on his face when his name was called was beyond priceless. His mouth simply dropped open! The 4 of us (Snowy & I, and Christopher's parents) had to stop from laughing out loud. Deborah was almost as proud of Christopher as his parents. :D

I also had a nice chat with Deborah's group leader. Initially I just wanted to tell her that Deb had her verses, but may need a little prompting on one or 2 of them. The leader asked if Deb could say the references; I said that I didn't think so - if I said the references, she could say the verses, but I didn't know if she could do the whole thing cold.

After AWANA, the leader told me that Deb did, indeed, know all of the references AND verses! She told me that she (the leader) was actually one of the main record-keepers for AWANA, and she knew "what kid was capable of doing what" based on how far they have gotten in their books. She said that Deborah was "brilliant (although a little flighty)" and had a HUGE potential to go really far. She also said that Deborah is going to be "an incredible witness for Christ" and, as a result, pushes her just a little harder than most of the other kids ("pushes" is not the right word, but you know what I mean). This particular leader is thrilled to be able to be the one to work with Deborah.

BTW, Deb practically has her next jewel already; all she has to do is Psalm 23!

That's great that they have a good AWANA program. I wish there was a good one here that we could actually make it to.

Last Friday was great. Aside of the fact that I had a slight temp, I was able to watch both Deborah and her friend Christopher earn 2 jewels each! However, soon after, little Elizabeth stole the show:

The Cubbies were asked to stand and recite their verse of the week, which they did wonderfully. The leader, Rick, asked the Cubbies, "Now, do you know where that verse is?

Elizabeth shot her hand up and went, "Oh! I know! I know!"

Rick said, "OK, Elizabeth...where?"

Elizabeth smiled and said, "It's in my Bible!"

Deborah is taking off like a runaway train! Once again, she finished this year's AWANA book; last week, she finished the review. I had told her that all she really had to do was 5-6 verses a week...she did 4 the first week, ALL but about 6 (& the books of the Old Testament) the 2nd week, and all those the 3rd. She's now doing the extra credit book. As an added challenge, the leader asked her to memorize Psalm 1 by Friday...a challenge she has taken with oddly great glee.

I have to add that, on top of all this, she is teaching herself French using a 15-page printout her teacher gave her, teaching herself a little geography, getting 3rd grade grammar homework one day a week (which she happily calls her "interesting homework") ON TOP of her regular homework, an after school class on sign language (one day a week) that she almost begged for...and being a 7-year-old.

On the Cubbie side, Elizabeth surprised me by reading last week's verse ("Let the little children come to me") all by herself...except for the word "children". She is always the first one to raise her hand when the Cubbies are asked if they know their verse, even tho the question doesn't mean if EACH one does, but as a group.

Sometimes she just scares me, tho. She learns things SO easily, and does SO much. I don't want her to burn out, I don't want her to be bored, and I don't want her to get too ahead of herself. I'm also afraid of being the one to have to hold her back, either because of my own limitations or because of financial constraints.

We've pretty much decided (after much prayer and talking to other key people) that we will let her fly unless there is any kind of problem (either academically or even socially).

I was really worried about my Deborah, after she started reading at 3 1/2. I was afraid she would get too far ahead, the same things you are worried about. I kind of held her back just a bit, trying to pace her so she is a bit ahead of her peers, but not too far ahead. She's fine. I don't think I really had anything to worry about, things just kind of evened out on their own. :)

She is still really excited about learning. It helps that her auntie Eastwind loves sending her books though. ;) :D

Well, here we are, the beginning of Feburary...and Deborah has only one section left in the EXTRA book. She'll have it done for this Friday. She'll have earned her Sparky pin and will be done with the traditional curriculum for the year. She also earned an invitation to "Pancakes with the Pastors" this week.

Snowy and I talked to one of the leaders. Beth (the wife of the leader, Rick) said that they already have the situation under control. They've ordered a special book for her. It's an A-B-C book, with a Bible verse corresponding with each letter. This will give her 26 more verses, which SHOULD last her to the end of the year.

On another note, this week was "Team Week", where the kids wear apparel from their favorite sports' team. While this was supposed to tie in with the Super Bowl (yuck), the girls proudly wore their NASCAR team T-shirts: Deborah wore her Kevin Harvick #29 shirt and pink Chevrolet hat, and Elizabeth had her Dale Earnhardt Jr. (#88) shirt & pink hat. (What's cool is that the shirt we found for Elizabeth doesn't have his main sponsor, which is an energy drink; instead, it has his alternate sponsor...National Guard!)
